Tungnath Temple

Tungnath is the highest Shiva temple in the Garhwal region, Uttarakhand. It’s at the height of 3680 m from sea level and the best time to visit this place is during the month of May to October.

Since the region receives heavy snowfall during the winter season.

During the winter season, the deity is shifted to Markandey Temple in Makku Village also known as Makkumath.

How to reach Tungnath temple

If you are travelling from somewhere other than Delhi, Then you can either get a flight to Jolly Grant airport in Dehradun which is the closest airport or can reach Haridwar Railway station via train as well rest of the itinerary will remain the same for you as well.

Day 1: Delhi to Haridwar

If you are starting your journey from Delhi you can either get a bus from Kashmiri Gate Bus station or can board a train from any of the stations in Delhi NCR to Haridwar. From where I’ll suggest one night stay in Haridwar only.

Get an early morning bus from GMOU bus stand, Haridwar. Route: (Assuming you are travelling from Delhi)

Delhi – Haridwar (Bus/ Train) 230 Km

Haridwar – Rudraprayag (Early Morning Bus) 160 Km

Rudraprayag – Ukhimath (Bus) 44 Km

Ukhimath – Chopta (Cab) 65 Km

Tungnath – Chandrashila Peak (1 km Moderate Trek)

I will highly recommend you to complete the above journey the very same day so that you can get a chance to witness sunrise from Chandrashila peak as well though it’s optional.

Trek to Tungnath is only 4 Km but its a very steep so you can consider it to be an easy to moderate trek.

Day 3: Back

Have a bowl of Maggi and a hot cup of tea early in the morning and enjoy the peace and serenity of the Garhwal region and you can start your trek back to Chopta. After that, you can start your journey back to Delhi following the same route.
