Ravanahatha – An instrument from the Past

Ravanahatha is a primitive string instrument made up using locally available material like bamboo and strings.

It is believed that Ravanahatha is one of the oldest musical instrument known to mankind and some also consider it to be the precursor for the modern day string instrument like a violin. The origin of this fascinating instrument is linked with Hela civilization of Srilanka.

Legends have it that it was also played by the daemon God Ravana. That’s why it named after him only.

The term ravanhatha literally mean Ravana’s Hands. Also supports this tale to its inception.

Even in the Hindu Ramayana epic, after the war between Ram and Ravana, Hanuman picked up a ravanhatha and returned to North India. In India, the ravanahatha is still played in Rajasthan.
