Parashar Lake, based at an elevation of around 2700m at a distance of 50km from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh. It can be considered to be one of the best weekend destinations from Delhi NCR or Chandigarh. Here are a few things you must know if you are planning to visit Parashar Lake.
- It is believed that Sage Parashar meditated at the bank of this lake.
- He even built a temple on the bank of this lake when he was just 6 months old with just a single tree.
- Till now no one has been able to find the depth of this lake.
- Legends have it that the lake was made by Bhim. After the Mahabharata war when he came to this place he created this lake just by ramming his elbow to this mountain.
- It’s more of a fact over myth, there an island in the middle of this lake which keeps on changing its position but nobody actually knows why or how.
Best time to visit Parashar
Most of the tourism happens here during summers only as during winters the mountains are covered with snow. And there is almost no connectivity through roads during winters.
During winters trekking is the only way to reach till Parashar. So if you are an adventure lover or you love trekking winter is the best time to visit else you can visit there in summers.
Note: according to locals, weather is a little unpredictable there. So go prepared accordingly.
How to reach Parashar lake
Parashar via Road
The closest town to Parashar lake is Mandi which is well connected via buses and other roadways. Mandi can be considered to be the center point between Manali and Shimla as it takes roughly 3 hours to reach from both the places via road. After reaching Mandi you can either book a cab from Mandi bus stop or can board the only bus which runs to and fro between Mandi and Parashar. The bus leaves the bus stop between 8 – 8:30 in the morning and reaches Parashar at around 11:00 AM. The very same bus then returns from Parashar at 1:00 PM and reaches Mandi at around 4:00 PM.
The cab from Mandi will cost you between INR 1500-2000 depending upon the time of year you choose to visit. The mountains are snow covered hence drivers there tend to ask for a higher price. On the other hand, the bus is a lot cheaper so if you are on a budget trip you can save some hard earned cash there.
Parashar via Airways
The closest airport is Bhuntar Airport which is around 75 km from Mandi. You can check for your flight to Bhuntar and from there either you can book a cab or board a bus from Bhuntar to Mandi. Again you can either book a cab from Mandi to Parashar or can board the only bus which runs from Mandi bus station to Parashar at 8:30 in the morning. Ideally, you will have to book a cab if you missed the bus which will cost you around INR 2000 not to mention you can use your negotiation skills while booking your cab.
Things to do at Parashar
People often travel to Parashar to enjoy the magnificent views and serenity of Himachal Pradesh. You can either choose to trek or can board a bus or cab till Parashar depending upon the time of year which you choose to travel. As during winters the mountains are covered in snow and trekking is the only option to reach there.
You can also enjoy camping and borne fire as well under the clear sky above Parashar. Trust me it is one of the best weekend destinations for trek lovers or campers.
Trek to Parashar
In order to start your trek to Parashar, you will have to reach Baggi or kantlu first. Both are small villages located at a distance of around 7 km and 10km respectively from Parashar. From here you can either take a guide or just start trekking on the trail with a little guidance from villagers only. But assuming that this is your first time I’ll suggest you book a guide.
It’s an easy to moderate trek which can be completed within 4-5 hours depending from where you start your trek.
You can easily start your trek after having breakfast at around 10-11:00 AM so that you can reach the lake before the sunset.
Note: During winters the mountains will be covered with snow so it might take you longer than usual so plan accordingly.
Stay at Parashar
There are a number of options to stay at Parashar you can either book a small room or can even stay in a tent for a night totally depending upon you.
I’ll personally suggest that you go to tents as it’s a unique experience.
If you are looking for rooms there are many small restaurants just at the entry point of the premises of the temple you can contact them for the rooms. Rooms at Parashar will cost you around INR 500 per head. If you decided to stay in a tent then it will cost you anything between INR 500 to 1000 depending upon the location you choose. These are a camping sight around 2.5 km from the lake they will charge you INR 1000 and anywhere close to temple premises can be as low as INR 500.
It’s better to stay close to the temple because trust me you don’t want to miss the view of the lake during sunrise and sunset.
